QS-21

QS-21 is a highly effective vaccine adjuvant widely used in various human vaccines, such as the shingles vaccine Shingrix and the respiratory syncytial virus vaccine Arexvy. By enhancing the immune system's response, it significantly improves the protective efficacy of vaccines.

The Importance of QS-21

QS-21 is a triterpenoid saponin composed of two isomers (QS-21 β-D-Apiofuranose and QS-21 β-D-Xylopyranose).​

It can simultaneously activate Th1 and Th2 immune responses, significantly enhancing the immunogenicity of vaccines.​QS-21 has been used in various vaccine adjuvant systems, such as AS01 (GlaxoSmithKline's Shingrix vaccine) and Matrix-M (Novavax's COVID-19 vaccine). However, traditional extraction methods are limited by the scarcity of Quillaja saponaria resources and the complexity of the extraction process, leading to insufficient supply and high costs.
